And they themselves become accusers and witnesses and judges and the authors of the sentence, saying: “Crucify, crucify him,” so that what is written about him in the Prophets might be fulfilled: “Unjust witnesses gathered against me, and injustice lied to itself,” and again, “Many dogs surrounded me; a congregation of evildoers enclosed me,” and in other places, “My inheritance became to me like a lion in the forest; it gave its voice against me.”

Pilate, then, having disgraced his office by cowardice, convicts himself of wickedness, courting the crowds in preference to justice, and while bearing witness to him as blameless, yet handing him over to the punishment of the cross as guilty, although the laws of the Romans laid down that no one should die without being convicted.

And the executioners, taking the Lord of glory, nailed him to the wood, crucifying him at the sixth hour, having received the sentence about him at the third hour. [15] Then “they gave him vinegar to drink with gall”; then “they divided his garments by lot”; then they crucified two criminals with him, one on each side, so that what was written might be fulfilled, “They gave gall for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink,” and again, “They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots,” and in other places, “And I was reckoned with the lawless.” [16] Then “there was darkness for three hours, from the sixth to the ninth,” and light again toward evening, as it is written, “And it shall be neither day nor night, and toward evening there shall be light.” [17] And about the ninth hour he cried out and said to the Father, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And a little later, crying with a loud voice, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing,” and adding, “Into your hands I commit my spirit,” he breathed his last; and he is buried before sunset in a new tomb. [18] And as the first day of the week was dawning, he rose from the dead and fulfilled what he had foretold to us before his passion, saying, “The Son of Man must spend three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” [19] And having “risen” from the dead, he appears “first to Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James,” then to Cleopas on the road, and after this to us his disciples, who had fled for fear of the Jews but were secretly inquiring into what concerned him. These things are also written in the Gospel. [20] He himself, then, commanded us to fast these six days because of the impiety and lawlessness of the Jews, bidding us mourn and lament over them for their destruction; for he himself too “wept over them, since they did not know the time of their visitation.” And he commanded us to fast on Wednesday and Friday, the one because of the betrayal, the other because of the passion; and he commanded us to break the fast on the seventh day at cockcrow, but to fast on the Sabbath itself, not because one ought to fast on the Sabbath, since it is the rest from creation, but because on that one alone one must fast, the Creator being still under the earth on it. [21] For on their very feast they seized the Lord, so that the oracle might be fulfilled which says, “They set up their signs in the midst of their feast, and they did not know.” We must, then, mourn for them, because when the Lord came they did not believe him, but shook off his teaching, judging themselves unworthy of salvation.

when the first day of the week, which is the Lord's day, is dawning. From evening until cockcrow keep vigil, assembling together in the church; watch, praying and beseeching God in your night-long vigil, reading the Law, the Prophets, the Psalms until the crowing of the cocks; and having baptized your catechumens, and read the Gospel with fear and trembling, and spoken to the people what pertains to salvation, cease from your mourning, and beseech God that Israel may be converted and receive a place of repentance and the forgiveness of its impiety. [4] For the foreign judge washed his hands and said, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; see to it yourselves”; but Israel cried out, “His blood be on us and on our children”; and when Pilate said, “Shall I crucify your king?” they cried out, “We have no king but Caesar; crucify him, crucify him; for everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar, and if you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend.”

For even now, on the tenth of the month Gorpiaeus, they assemble and read the Lamentations of Jeremiah, in which it is said, “The breath of our face, Christ the Lord, was taken in their corruptions,” and Baruch, in which it is written, “This is our God; no other shall be reckoned beside him. He found out every way of knowledge and showed it to Jacob his servant and to Israel, who was beloved by him; afterward he appeared on earth and lived among men.” And when they read, they beat their breasts and lament, as they themselves suppose, over the desolation that took place under Nebuchadnezzar, but, as the truth is, they are unwillingly making a prelude to the mourning that is about to overtake them.

After you have celebrated Pentecost, then, celebrate one week, and after that fast one; for it is right both to rejoice in the gift from God and to fast after the relaxation.

Let us consider, then, beloved, what the fame of those who rebelled was, and what sort of sentence was passed on them. For if he who rises against kings deserves punishment, even if he is a son or a friend, how much more he who rises up against priests? For as much as the priesthood is better than the kingship, having its contest concerning the soul, so much heavier is the punishment of him who dares to set himself against it than of him who does so against the kingship.

And before these another said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us?” … to him who had parted the waters on this side and that like a wall, and led the people as through a dry desert, and drowned Pharaoh and the Egyptians and all who were with them; who sweetened a spring for them by means of wood, and brought forth water for them from the sheer rock when they were thirsty; who gave them manna from heaven and meat from the air; who provided them with a pillar of fire at night for light and guidance and a pillar of cloud for shade by day because of the heat of the sun; who provided them with the law of God, from the mouth and hand and writing of God, engraved on tablets of stone, a decalogue of perfect number; “with whom God spoke face to face, as one would speak to his own friend”; of whom he said, “And there has not arisen a prophet like Moses.” [3.2] Against him the Korahites and the Reubenites rose up, and threw stones at Moses as he prayed and said, “Do not regard their sacrifice”; and the glory of God appeared and brought some down into the earth and burned up others with fire; and so the leaders of the error of the schism, who said, “Let us appoint a leader for ourselves”: “the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their tents and their belongings, and they went down alive into Hades; and the Korahites he destroyed by fire.”

If, then, God at once brought punishment on those who split off out of love of rule, how much more on those who have led the way in ungodly heresies? Will he not bring a more severe penalty on those who blaspheme his providence or his creation?
