This old man at first wore an astonishing garb, full of hypocrisy. Outwardly he was truly clothed in a sheepskin, but it was not known that inwardly he was a ravening wolf. For he seemed to be a hermit, living in a cave; he supposedly gathered many into renunciation of the world and was called 'father' because of his age and his habit; he distributed his possessions to the poor and gave alms daily.

They anathematize the washing, even if some among them were previously received and baptized. And they reject participation in the mysteries and their goodness as alien and performed in the name of Sabaoth; for they want him, as some of the other heresies do, to be in the seventh heaven, tyrannizing and prevailing over the others.

Marcion, from whom the Marcionites come, took his starting point from this Cerdo whom I mentioned before. He too came forth into life as a great serpent, and having deceived a great multitude, he set up a school that has lasted to this day in many forms.

The sect is still found even now in Rome and in Italy, in Egypt and in Palestine, in Arabia and in Syria, in Cyprus and the Thebaid, and indeed also in Persia and in other places. For the evil one has greatly strengthened the deception in him.

In his early life he supposedly practised virginity, for he was a solitary and the son of a bishop of our holy catholic church. But as time went on he seduced a certain virgin; having deceived the virgin, he dragged both her and himself down from their hope, and after committing the seduction he was expelled from the church by his own father.

Notes and citation

Summary: Epiphanius reports that Marcion, a bishop's son, seduced a virgin and was excommunicated by his father.

  • This hostile story is found only in Epiphanius and later writers; it is translated as he reports it. 'Solitary' renders μονάζων, 'living as a monk'. The digital text's ἐξεοῦται is taken as a form of 'is expelled' (probably ἐξωθεῖται).

Notes on the original text

  • Digital text corrected (OCR slip for 'virgin'.): παθένῳ → παρθένῳ.

Marcion, so the story goes, begged much and asked for penance, but did not receive it from his own father. For grief held the worthy old man and bishop, because Marcion had not only fallen but had also brought shame upon him.

Notes and citation

Summary: Marcion's father refused to readmit him to penance.

  • μετάνοια is rendered 'penance' here, since readmission to the church's communion is meant.

So, since he did not obtain from him by flattery what he was asking for, and could not bear the ridicule of the many, he ran away from his city and went up to Rome itself, after the death of Hyginus, bishop of Rome (he was the ninth from the apostles Peter and Paul). He met the presbyters who were still living, men who had come from the disciples of the apostles, and asked to be admitted to communion, and no one granted it to him.

Notes and citation

Summary: Marcion went to Rome after Hyginus's death and was refused communion by the presbyters.

  • 'Admitted to communion' renders συναχθῆναι, literally 'to be gathered in' (to the assembly).
