Gospel of Peter (Akhmim fragment) (complete)

Pseudonymous: Anonymous; the work is a gospel under Peter's name (pseudonymous). Serapion of Antioch (ca. 200) rejected it, according to Eusebius (Hist. eccl. 6.12). Only this fragment (the Akhmim codex, 8th-9th century; Passion and resurrection narrative, verses 1-60 in Harnack's numbering) and small papyrus scraps survive. Generally dated to the second century (ca. 100-200; confidence: approximate). It is not part of the 66-book canon.

Greek text: Harnack 1893 (Scan from the Internet Archive).English: Claude (claude-opus-5-5), public domain (CC0).

Εὐαγγέλιον κατὰ Πέτρον

Euangelion kata Petron

The Gospel according to Peter

Textual problem in this passage: see the notes.

Notes and citation

Summary: The title of the fragment.

  • The title is the one under which the Akhmim fragment is known; the manuscript gives none at the start of the surviving text. The fragment (found at Akhmim in Egypt in 1886–87) begins in the middle of the trial of Jesus and breaks off after the resurrection. Bishop Serapion of Antioch (ca. 200) knew a Gospel of Peter and found some of it docetic (Eusebius, Hist. eccl. 6.12).

But of the Jews no one washed his hands, nor did Herod or any one of his judges; and since they would not wash, Pilate rose.

Matt 27:24 (allusion, high confidence)

Notes and citation

Summary: Unlike Pilate, neither the Jews nor Herod and his judges wash their hands.

  • The fragment begins mid-sentence. Words in square brackets in Harnack's text are restorations of the damaged manuscript and are translated. Hand-washing echoes Matt 27:24.

And Herod said: 'Brother Pilate, even if no one had asked for him, we would have buried him, since the sabbath is dawning; for it is written in the law that the sun should not set on one who has been put to death' … before the first day of the unleavened bread, their feast.
