About this work

Attribution
pseudonymous · Anonymous; the work is a gospel under Peter's name (pseudonymous). Serapion of Antioch (ca. 200) rejected it, according to Eusebius (Hist. eccl. 6.12). Only this fragment (the Akhmim codex, 8th-9th century; Passion and resurrection narrative, verses 1-60 in Harnack's numbering) and small papyrus scraps survive. Generally dated to the second century (ca. 100-200; confidence: approximate). It is not part of the 66-book canon.
Standing
Not honoured as a saint or in a church calendar by the Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant traditions. Not outside by the rule: Serapion of Antioch (ca. 200) first allowed its reading at Rhossus before forbidding it as docetic, and Origen cites it without condemnation (Comm. Matt. 10.17).
Date
ca. 100–200 (approximate) · Known to Serapion of Antioch (ca. 200); a papyrus scrap (P.Oxy. 2949) may be from the second century.
