Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The passion served only to sort out the mixture; the whole Sonship must be sorted as Jesus was.

Τῆς οὖν φυλοκρινήσεως ἀπαρχὴ γέγονεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ τὸ πάθος οὐκ ἄλλου τινὸς χάριν γέγονεν ὑπὸ τοῦ φυλοκρινηθῆναι τὰ συγκεχυμένα. Τούτῳ γὰρ τῷ τρόπῳ φησὶν ὅλην τὴν υἱότητα τὴν καταλελειμμένην εἰς τὴν ἀμορφίαν πρὸς τὸ εὐεργετεῖν καὶ εὐεργετεῖσθαι δεῖν φυλοκρινηθῆναι, ᾧ τρόπῳ καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς πεφυλοκρίνηται.

Jesus, then, became the first fruits of the sorting, and the passion took place for no other reason than that the confused things might be sorted out.
