Refutation of All Heresies 6.35.4
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: Jesus, the new man, received his body from the Demiurge and his substance from Sophia, a heavenly Word born through Mary.
English · Claude translation
For he was born not from the Most High alone, as those created after Adam were created from the Most High alone, that is, [from Sophia and] from the Demiurge; but Jesus, the new man, was born from the Holy Spirit, that is, from Sophia, and from the Demiurge, so that the Demiurge might complete the fashioning and furnishing of his body, and the Holy Spirit might supply his substance, and he might become a heavenly Word born from the Ogdoad through Mary.
