Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The Savior was born to show the captive souls the way of escape; clothed in the only-begotten power, he could not be seen in his glory.

Ταύτας τὰς ψυχάς, οὗ χάριν φάσκουσι τὸν σωτῆρα παραγεννηθῆναι, ἐπιδεικνύντα τὴν ὁδόν, διʼ ἧς φεύξονται αἱ κρατούμεναι ψυχαί, ἐνδεδύσθαι δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν τὴν δύναμιν ἐκείνην τὴν μονογενῆ· διὸ μὴ δύνασθαι θεαθῆναι ὑπό τινος διὰ τὸ μεθαλλόμενον μέγεθος τῆς δόξης. Πάντα δὲ συμβεβηκέναι αὐτῷ φασὶ καθὰ ἐν τοῖς εὐαγγελίοις γέγραπται.

These souls it is, they claim, for whose sake the Savior was born, showing the way by which the souls held captive will escape; and that Jesus put on that only-begotten power; for which reason he cannot be seen by anyone because of the overwhelming greatness of his glory.
