οὐ μὴν ἐπὶ τούτῳ γε καταστρέφειν ἤμελλε τὰ τῆς ἐκκλησίας, ἀνορθοῦται δʼ αὐτὰ πρὸς αὐτοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ πάντων σωτῆρος αὐτίκα τῆς αὐτόθι παροικίας ἐπίσκοπος ἀναδειχθεὶς Θεόδοτος, πράγμασιν αὐτοῖς ἀνὴρ καὶ τὸ κύριον ὄνομα καὶ τὸν ἐπίσκοπον ἐπαληθεύσας. ἰατρικῆς μὲν γὰρ σωμάτων ἀπεφέρετο τὰ πρῶτα τῆς ἐπιστήμης, ψυχῶν δὲ θεραπευτικῆς οἷος οὐδὲ ἄλλος ἀνθρώπων ἐτύγχανε, φιλανθρωπίας, γνησιότητος, συμπαθείας, σπουδῆς τῆς τῶν παρʼ αὐτοῦ δεομένων ὠφελείας ἕνεκεν. πολὺ δὲ ἦν αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ περὶ τὰ θεῖα μαθήματα συνησκημένον. οὗτος μὲν δὴ τοιοῦτος ἦν.

Yet the affairs of the church were not to be ruined by him, but they were set right by God himself, the Saviour of all, Theodotus being immediately declared bishop of the community there, a man who proved true in his very deeds both to his lordly name and to that of bishop. For he carried off the first place in the science of healing bodies, and in the healing of souls was such as no other man, for kindness, sincerity, sympathy, and zeal for the benefit of those who needed his help. He was also much trained in divine studies. Such was he.
