ὅθεν καὶ ὁ Πέτρος ἐν τῷ κηρύγματι περὶ τῶν ἀποστόλων λέγων φησίν· ἡμεῖς δὲ ἀναπτύξαντες τὰς βίβλους ἃς εἴχομεν τῶν προφητῶν, ἃ μὲν διὰ παραβολῶν, ἃ δὲ διʼ αἰνιγμάτων, ἃ δὲ αὐθεντικῶς καὶ αὐτολεξεὶ τὸν Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν ὀνομαζόντων, εὕρομεν καὶ τὴν παρουσίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸν θάνατον καὶ τὸν σταυρὸν καὶ τὰς λοιπὰς κολάσεις πάσας ὅσας ἐποίησαν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ τὴν ἔγερσιν καὶ τὴν εἰς οὐρανοὺς ἀνάληψιν πρὸ τοῦ Ἱεροσόλυμα † κτισθῆναι, καθὼς ἐγέγραπτο ταῦτα πάντα, ἃ ἔδει αὐτὸν παθεῖν καὶ † μετʼ αὐτὸν ἃ ἔσται. ταῦτα οὖν ἐπιγνόντες ἐπιστεύσαμεν τῷ θεῷ διὰ τῶν γεγραμμένων εἰς αὐτόν. καὶ μετʼ ὀλίγα ἐπιφέρει πάλιν θείᾳ προνοίᾳ τὰς προφητείας γεγενῆσθαι παριστὰς ὧδε· ἔγνωμεν γὰρ ὅτι ὁ θεὸς αὐτὰ προσέταξεν ὄντως, καὶ οὐδὲν ἄτερ γραφῆς λέγομεν.
English · Claude translation
That is why Peter too, in the Preaching, speaking about the apostles, says: “But we, having unrolled the books of the prophets that we had, which name Christ Jesus partly in parables, partly in riddles, and partly authoritatively and in so many words, found his coming, his death, the cross, and all the other punishments the Jews inflicted on him, and his raising and his taking up into heaven before Jerusalem was † founded, as all these things had been written, what he had to suffer and † what would be after him. Recognizing these things, then, we believed God through what had been written about him.” And a little later he adds again, showing that the prophecies came about by divine providence: “For we know that God truly ordained them, and we say nothing without Scripture.”
