Miscellanies 4.12.85
Summary: Basilides virtually deifies the devil and makes the Lord a sinner; the devil is permitted to tempt only to test our free choice, shame himself, and strengthen the church; if martyrdom were punishment, faith, love, and virtue would lose their meaning.
Greek text · Stählin 2:285–286
πῶς δὲ οὐκ ἄθεος θειάζων μὲν τὸν διάβολον, ἄνθρωπον δὲ ἁμαρτητικὸν τολμήσας εἰπεῖν τὸν κύριον; πειράζει γὰρ ὁ διάβολος εἰδὼς μὲν ὅ ἐσμεν, οὐκ εἰδὼς δὲ εἰ ὑπομενοῦμεν· ἀλλὰ ἀποσεῖσαι τῆς πίστεως ἡμᾶς βουλόμενος καὶ ὑπάγεσθαι ἑαυτῷ πειράζει, ὅπερ καὶ μόνον ἐπιτέτραπται αὐτῷ διά τε τὸ ἡμᾶς ἐξ ἑαυτῶν σῴζεσθαι δεῖν, ἀφορμὰς παρὰ τῆς ἐντολῆς εἰληφότας, διά τε τὸν καταισχυμμὸν τοῦ πειράσαντος καὶ ἀποτυχόντος διά τε τὴν ἰσχυροποίησιν τῶν κατὰ τὴν ἐκκλησίαν διά τε τὴν συνείδησιν τῶν θαυμασάντων τὴν ὑπομονήν. εἰ δὲ τὸ μαρτύριον ἀνταπόδοσις διὰ κολάσεως, καὶ ἡ πίστις καὶ ἡ διδασκαλία, διʼ ἃς τὸ μαρτύριον· συνεργοὶ ἄρα αὗται κολάσεως, ἧς τίς ἂν ἄλλη μείζων ἀπέμφασις γένοιτο; ἀλλὰ πρὸς μὲν τὰ δόγματα ἐκεῖνα, εἰ μετενσωματοῦται ἡ ψυχή, καὶ περὶ τοῦ διαβόλου κατὰ τοὺς οἰκείους λεχθήσεται καιρούς, νυνὶ δὲ τοῖς εἰρημένοις καὶ ταῦτα προσθῶμεν· ποῦ ἔτι ἡ πίστις κατὰ ἀνταπόδοσιν τῶν προημαρτημένων τοῦ μαρτυρίου γινομένου, ποῦ δὲ ἡ ἀγάπη ἡ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν διὰ τὴν ἀλήθειαν διωκομένη καὶ ὑπομένουσα, ποῦ δὲ ἔπαινος ὁμολογήσαντος ἢ ψόγος ἀρνησαμένου, εἰς τί δὲ ἔτι χρησίμη ἡ πολιτεία ἡ ὀρθή, τὸ νεκρῶσαι τὰς ἐπιθυμίας καὶ μηδὲν τῶν κτισμάτων μισεῖν;
English · Claude translation
And how is he not godless, deifying the devil and daring to call the Lord a sinful man? For the devil tempts, knowing what we are, but not knowing whether we will endure; but wishing to shake us from the faith and bring us under himself, he tempts. This alone has been permitted him, both because we must be saved by ourselves, having received starting points from the commandment, and for the shame of the tempter who fails, and for the strengthening of those in the church, and for the conscience of those who marvel at the endurance. But if martyrdom is a requital through punishment, then faith and teaching too, because of which martyrdom comes, are fellow workers of punishment; what greater absurdity could there be? But against those doctrines, whether the soul is reincarnated, and about the devil, we will speak at the proper times; now let us add this to what has been said: where is faith any longer, if martyrdom happens as requital for sins committed before? Where is love for God, persecuted and enduring for the truth? Where is praise of the one who confesses, or blame of the one who denies? And what use is right conduct any longer, putting desires to death and hating nothing created?
