Chapter 1

1Bonwetsch GCS 27:520

Ek tou peri martyrōn logou. I. houtō gar thaumaston kai perispoudaston esti to martyrion. hoti autos ho kyrios Iēsous Christos, ho huios tou theou, timōn auto emartyrēsen, „ouch harpagmon hēgēsamenos to einai isa theǭ“, hina kai toutǭ ton anthrōpon tǭ charismati eis hon katebē stepsę̄.

From the discourse On the Martyrs.

I. For martyrdom is so wonderful and so worth striving for that the Lord Jesus Christ himself, the Son of God, honoring it, bore witness, “not counting it robbery to be equal with God,” so that he might crown with this gift too the human being to whom he came down.

Phil 2:6 (quotation, high confidence) · Phil 2:7 (allusion, medium confidence)

Notes and citation

Summary: Christ himself honored martyrdom by bearing witness, though equal with God, to crown humanity with this gift.
