Κἀγὼ ἀπεκρινάμην· Νουνεχέστατα μὲν καὶ συνετώτατα ἠρώτησας· ἀληθῶς γὰρ ἀπόρημα δοκεῖ εἶναι· ἀλλʼ ἵνα ἴδῃς καὶ τὸν περὶ τούτων λόγον, ἄκουε ὧν λέγω. Ταύτας τὰς κατηριθμημένας τοῦ πνεύματος δυνάμεις οὐχ ὡς ἐνδεοῦς αὐτοῦ τούτων ὄντος φησὶν ὁ λόγος ἐπεληλυθέναι ἐπʼ αὐτόν, ἀλλʼ ὡς ἐπʼ ἐκεῖνον ἀνάπαυσιν μελλουσῶν ποιεῖσθαι, τουτέστιν ἐπʼ αὐτοῦ πέρας ποιεῖσθαι, τοῦ μηκέτι ἐν τῷ γένει ὑμῶν κατὰ τὸ παλαιὸν ἔθος προφήτας γενήσεσθαι, ὅπερ καὶ ὄψει ὑμῖν ἰδεῖν ἔστι· μετʼ ἐκεῖνον γὰρ οὐδεὶς ὅλως προφήτης παρʼ ὑμῖν γεγένηται.

And I answered, “You have asked most sensibly and intelligently; for it does truly seem to be a difficulty; but so that you may see the account of these things too, listen to what I say. The word says that these powers of the Spirit that have been listed came upon him, not as though he lacked them, but as about to rest upon him, that is, to come to an end in him, so that there would no longer be prophets in your race according to the ancient custom; which you can see with your own eyes; for after him no prophet at all has arisen among you.
