Refutation of All Heresies 9.30.5
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: All Jews await the Christ foretold by the prophets, but because they failed to recognize him and killed him, they still expect him.
English · Claude translation
All of them alike await the Christ, since the Law and the Prophets proclaimed beforehand that he would come; but the Jews did not recognize the time of his coming, [so that] the suspicion remains that what was [said] about his coming has not been fulfilled, and they still expect the Christ to come, because they did not recognize him when he was present. Seeing the signs of the times that he has already come, they are troubled, and are ashamed to confess that he has come, since they became his murderers, being angry at being rebuked by him for not having obeyed the laws.
