Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The seven days of unleavened bread mean that creation needs no outside “leaven”; the whole world is the Lord's Passover.

Ἀπὸ δὲ τῆς τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτης, φησίν, ἕως μιᾶς καὶ εἰκάδος ἑβδομάδα λέγει ὑπάρχουσαν ἐν τῇ μιᾷ κεραίᾳ τοῦ κόσμου τὴν κτίσιν ἄζυμον ἐν τούτοις ἅπασιν. Τί γὰρ δεηθείη, φησίν, ἡ μία κεραία οὐσίας τινὸς οἱονεὶ ζύμης ἔξωθεν εἰς τὸ πάσχα τοῦ κυρίου, τὴν αἰώνιον ἑορτήν, ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰς τὰς γενεὰς δεδομένη; ὅλος γὰρ ὁ κόσμος καὶ πάντα τὰ τῆς κτίσεως αἴτια πάσχα ἐστίν, ἑορτὴ κυρίου.
