Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: When the whole Sonship has ascended, God will bring a great ignorance on the world, so that nothing desires what is beyond its nature.

Ὅταν οὖν ἔλθῃ, φησί, πᾶσα υἱότης καὶ ἔσται ὑπὲρ τὸ μεθόριον, τὸ πνεῦμα, τότε ἐλεηθήσεται ἡ κτίσις· στένει γὰρ μέχρι τοῦ νῦν καὶ βασανίζεται καὶ μένει τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν τῶν υἱῶν τοῦ θεοῦ, ἵνα πάντες ἀνέλθωσιν ἐντεῦθεν οἱ τῆς υἱότητος ἄνθρωποι· ἐπειδὰν [οὖν] γένηται τοῦτο, ἐπάξει, φησίν, ὁ θεὸς ἐπὶ τὸν κόσμον ὅλον τὴν μεγάλην ἄγνοιαν, ἵνα μένῃ πάντα κατὰ φύσιν καὶ μηδὲν μηδενὸς τῶν παρὰ φύσιν ἐπιθυ[μήσῃ].

When, then, he says, the whole Sonship has come and is above the boundary, the Spirit, then the creation will receive mercy; for until now it groans and is tormented and waits for the revelation of the sons of God, so that all the men of the Sonship may go up from here. And when this has happened, he says, God will bring upon the whole world the great ignorance, so that all things may remain according to nature and nothing may desire anything contrary to nature.
