Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The third Sonship must be revealed and restored above, which Basilides finds in Paul's words about creation awaiting the revelation of God's sons.

Ἐπεὶ οὖν τετέλεσται κατʼ αὐτοὺς ὁ κόσμος ὅλος καὶ τὰ ὑπερκόσμια καὶ ἔστιν ἐνδεὲς οὐδέν, λείπεται δὲ ἐν τῇ πανσπερμίᾳ ἡ υἱότης ἡ τρίτη, ἡ καταλελειμμένη εὐεργετεῖν καὶ εὐεργετεῖσθαι ἐν τῷ σπέρματι, καὶ ἔδει τὴν ὑπολελειμμένην υἱότητα ἀποκαλυφθῆναι καὶ ἀποκατασταθῆναι ἄνω ἐκεῖ ὑπὲρ τὸ μεθόριον πνεῦμα πρὸς τὴν υἱότητα τὴν λεπτομερῆ καὶ μιμητικὴν καὶ τὸν οὐκ ὄντα, ὡς γέγραπται, φησί· Καὶ ἡ κτίσις αὐτὴ συστενάζει καὶ συνωδίνει τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν τῶν υἱῶν τοῦ θεοῦ ἐκδεχομένη.

Since, then, according to them the whole world and the supramundane things were completed and nothing was lacking, but there remained in the seed-mass the third Sonship, which had been left behind to benefit and be benefited in the seed, and the Sonship that was left behind had to be revealed and restored up there above the boundary Spirit, to the fine and imitating Sonship and to the non-existent one, as it is written, he says: “And the creation itself groans together and travails together, awaiting the revelation of the sons of God.”
