Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The thirty Aeons together emitted one Aeon, the common fruit of the Pleroma, as an offering to the Father.

Ἐπεὶ οὖν μία τις ἦν εἰρήνη καὶ συμφωνία πάντων τῶν ἐντὸς πληρώματος αἰώνων, ἔδοξεν αὐτοῖς μὴ μόνον κατὰ συζυγίαν δεδοξακέναι αὐτόν, δοξάσαι [δὲ] καὶ διὰ προσφορᾶς καρπῶν πρεπόντων τῷ πατρί. Πάντες οὖν ηὐδόκησαν οἱ τριάκοντα αἰῶνες ἕνα προβαλεῖν αἰῶνα, κοινὸν τοῦ πληρώματος καρπόν, ἵνʼ ᾖ τῆς ἑνότητος αὐτῶν καὶ τῆς ὁμοφροσύνης καὶ εἰρήνης.

Since, then, there was one peace and concord among all the Aeons within the Pleroma, it seemed good to them not only to have glorified the Father by pairs, but also to glorify him by an offering of fitting fruits.
