Refutation of All Heresies 6.29.7

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Mind and Truth emit Word and Life, who emit Man and Church, and Mind and Truth offer the Father ten Aeons.

English · Claude translation

And Mind and Truth, put forth from the Father, generative from generative, themselves also put forth Word and Life, imitating the Father; and Word and Life put forth Man and Church. And Mind and Truth, when they saw that their own offspring [Word and Life] had been born generative, gave thanks to the Father of all and offer him a perfect number, ten Aeons.

Notes

Translation notes

  • The bracketed words (τοῦ λόγου καὶ τῆς ζωῆς, in the genitive) are the editor's supplement; they could instead mean “the offspring of Word and Life,” that is, Man and Church. Irenaeus (Against Heresies 1.1.2) attributes the ten Aeons to Word and Life.
