Refutation of All Heresies 5.9.18
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: The Euphrates is the mouth, and the water above the firmament is the living water Jesus offers.
English · Claude translation
"And the fourth river is Euphrates." This they say is the mouth, through which prayer goes out and food comes in, which gladdens (euphrainei), nourishes, and stamps the spiritual perfect man. This, he says, is the water above the firmament, about which, he says, the Savior said: "If you knew who it is who asks, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water, springing up, to drink."
