Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Αὐτὸς γοῦν ὁ Ἱερεμίας ἔλεγεν· Ἄνθρωπός ἐστι καὶ τίς γνώσεται αὐτόν; Οὕτως, φησίν, ἐστὶ πάνυ βαθεῖα καὶ δυσκατάληπτος ἡ τοῦ τελείου ἀνθρώπου γνῶσις. Ἀρχὴ γάρ, φησίν, τελειώσεως γνῶσις ἀνθρώπου· θεοῦ δὲ γνῶσις ἀπηρτισμένη τελείωσις.

At any rate Jeremiah himself said: "He is a man, and who will know him?" So, he says, the knowledge of the perfect Man is very deep and hard to grasp. For the beginning of perfection, he says, is knowledge of man, but knowledge of God is complete perfection.
