ταῦτα δὴ καθʼ ἡμῶν κατὰ πάσαν ἀνεστηλίτευτο, πάσης ἐλπίδος, τὸ γοῦν ἐπʼ ἀνθρώποις, ἀγαθῆς τὰ καθʼ ἡμᾶς ἀποκλείοντα· ὡς, κατʼ αὐτὸ δὴ τὸ θεῖον ἐκεῖνο λόγιον, εἰ δυνατὸν, ἐπὶ τούτοις καὶ τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς αὐτοὺς σκανδαλίζεσθαι.

These things were set up against us in every province, shutting off from us every good hope, at least as far as human beings were concerned; so that, according to that divine saying, even the elect themselves, if possible, might be caused to stumble by these things.
