καὶ ὁ μὲν Εἰρηναῖος φερώνυμός τις ὢν τῇ προσηγορίᾳ, αὐτῷ τε τῷ τρόπῳ εἰρηνοποιὸς, τοιαῦτα ὑπὲρ τῆς τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν εἰρήνης παρεκάλει τε καὶ ἐπρέσβευεν. ὁ δʼ αὐτὸς οὐ μόνον τῷ Βίκτορι, καὶ διαφόροις δὲ πλείστοις ἄρχουσιν ἐκκλησιῶν τὰ κατάλληλα διʼ ἐπιστολῶν περὶ τοῦ κεκινημένου ζητήματος ὡμίλει.

So Irenaeus, who was true to his name and was a peacemaker in his very conduct, exhorted and negotiated in this way for the peace of the churches. And he corresponded by letters in a similar vein about the controversy that had arisen not only with Victor but also with very many other rulers of churches.
