μάλιστα δὲ ἱστοροῦσιν διαπρέψαι τὸν γενναιότατον Γερμανι κὸν, ὑπορρωννύντα σὺν θείᾳ χάριτι τὴν ἔμφυτο περὶ τὸν θάνατον τοῦ σώματος δειλίαν. βουλομένο γέ τοι τοῦ ἀνθυπάτου πείθειν αὐτὸν, προβαλλομένου τε τὴν ἡλικίαν καὶ ἀντιβολοῦντος κομιδή νέο ὄντα καὶ ἀκμαῖον οἶκτον ἑαυτοῦ λαβεῖν, μὴ μελλη σαι, προθύμως δὲ ἐπισπάσασθαι εἰς ἑαυτὸν τὸ θη ῥίον, μονονουχὶ βιασάμενον καὶ παροξύναντα, ὡς τάχιον τοῦ ἀδίκου καὶ ἀνόμου βίου αὐτῶν ἀπαλλα γείη.

English · Claude translation

They relate that the most noble Germanicus especially distinguished himself, overcoming by divine grace the natural fear of bodily death. When the proconsul wished to persuade him, putting forward his age and entreating him, very young and in his prime as he was, to take pity on himself, he did not hesitate, but eagerly drew the beast upon himself, all but forcing and provoking it, so that he might be released the more quickly from their unjust and lawless life.
