ὡς δʼ ἅμα τῇ κατὰ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν καὶ τῶν ἄλλων νηπίων ἐπιβουλῇ θεήλατος αὐτὸν καταλαβοῦσα μάστιξ εἰς θάνατον συνήλασεν, οὐ χεῖρον καὶ τῶν φωνῶν τοῦ συγγρα φἐως ἐπακοῦσαι, κατὰ λέξιν ἐν ἑπτακαιδεκάτῳ τῆς ‘Ιουσϊκῆς ἀρχαιολογίας τὴν καταστροφὴν τοῦ κατʼ αὐτὸν βίου τοῦτον γράφοντος τὸν τρόπον· “Ἡρώδῃ “ δὲ μειζόνως ἡ νόσος ἐνεπικραίνετο, δίκην ὧν πάρα “ νομήσειεν ἐκπρασσομένου τοῦ θεοῦ.

But how, at the same time as his plot against our Saviour and the other infants, a scourge sent by God seized him and drove him to death, it is well to hear from the words of that writer, who in the seventeenth book of his Jewish Antiquities writes word for word of the end of his life in this way: “But Herod's disease grew steadily more severe, God exacting punishment for his crimes.
