προσκαλεσάμενος δὲ Σαλώμην τὴν ἀδελφὴν καὶ “ τὸν ἄνδρα ταύτης Ἀλέξανδρον οἶδα ἔφη Ἱουδαί- “ ους τὸν ἐμὸν ἑορτάσοντας θάνατον. δύναμαι δὲ πεν- ‘θεῖσθαι διʼ ἑτέρων καὶ λαμπρὸν ἐπιτάφιον σχεῖν, ἄν ὑμεῖς θελήσητε ταῖς ἐμαῖς ἐντολαῖς ὑπουργῆσαι. “ τοὺς δὲ φρουρουμένους ἄνδρας, ἐπειδὰν ἐκπνεύ- “ σω, τάχιστα κτείνατε περιστήσαντες τοὺς στρατιώ- “ τας, ἵνα πᾶσα Ἰουδαία καὶ πᾶς οἶκος καὶ ἄκων ἐπʼ “ἐμοὶ δακρύσῃ.‘”

And calling his sister Salome and her husband Alexander, he said, ‘I know that the Jews will celebrate my death as a festival. But I can be mourned on others' account and have a splendid funeral, if you are willing to carry out my orders. As soon as I breathe my last, surround these men under guard with the soldiers and kill them at once, so that all Judea and every household will weep over me, even against their will.’”
