αὐτὸς δʼ ὑποστρέφων εἰς ‘Ιεριχοῦντα παραγίνεται, μελαγχολῶν ἤδη, καὶ μονονουχὶ “ αὐτῷ τι τῷ θανάτῳ ἀπειλῶν προέκοψεν εἰς ἐπιβολὴν “ἀθεμίτου πράξεως. τοὺς γὰρ ἀφʼ ἑκάστης κώμης “ ἐπισήμους ἄνδρας ἐξ ὅλης Ἰουδαίας συναγαγὼν εἰς “ τὸν καλούμενον ἱππόδρομον ἐκέλευσε συγκλεῖσαι. “

He himself returned and came to Jericho, already in a black mood, and, all but threatening death itself, proceeded to plan a lawless deed. For he gathered the notable men from every village of all Judea and ordered them shut up in the so-called hippodrome.
