ἱστορεῖ δʼ οὖν ὁ Ἰώσηπος τέσσαρας κατὰ διαδοχὴν ἐπὶ Καϊάφαν ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τὸν Ἂνναν διαγενέσθαι, κατὰ τὴν αὐτὴν τῆς ἀρχαιολογίας γραφὴν ὧδέ πως λέγων “ Οὐαλέριος Γρᾶτος, παύσας “ἱερᾶσθαι Ἂνανον, Ἰσμάηλον ἀρχιερέα ἀποφαίνει τὸν “ τοῦ Φαβί. καὶ τοῦτον δὲ μετʼ οὐ πολὺ μεταστήσας “ ‘Ελεάζαρον τὸν ‘Ανάνου τοῦ ἀρχιερέως υἱὸν ἀποδεί- “κνυσιν ἀρχιερέα.

Josephus, at any rate, relates that four high priests followed in succession after Annas down to Caiaphas, saying in the same book of the Antiquities: “Valerius Gratus, having removed Ananus from the priesthood, appoints Ishmael the son of Phabi high priest. And having removed him not long after, he appoints Eleazar, the son of Ananus the high priest, high priest.
