### Latin text

Hagios, hagios, hagios, sancte sanctorum, pater patrum nostrorum, Deus Abraham, Deus Isaac, Deus Iacob, Deus prophetarum, Deus apostolorum, Deus uirginum, Deus bene uiuentium, Deus credentium, Deus et pater Domini nostri Iesu Christi filii tui: te inuocamus supplices pariter et deprecamur [fili unigenite], qui ex ore altissimi procreatus es ante mundi dispositionem et ex Mariae sanctae uirginis utero per mysterium editus: orantibus nobis desiderium animae, etiam integritatem cordis praestare dignare, ut lauacro salutari expiatum pectus delictis carnalibus incolume persistat. petimus fide inlibata, mente incorrupta, deuotione robusta, operatione seu dilectione continua, in tua ecclesia sancta semper nos florere permittas: quoniam tibi flectimus genua, curuamus ceruices, cui angeli archangeli milia milium martyrum. chorus apostolorum et prophetarum gloria exultant, cui omnes aues laudes canunt, linguae confitentur caelestium terrestrium et infernorum: tibi omnes aquae in caelo et sub caelo confitentur, te insensibilia sentiunt: tu es solus et praeter te nemo. te quaesumus, Domine pater omnipotens, qui soli filio conspectabilis es: angeli et archangeli obtemperant tibi Domine pater: te oramus, tribuas nobis mentem integram, innocentiam puram, sinceritatem deuotam, conscientiam sanctam [puram] sobriam castam, contra omnes insidias saeculi gloriosa fide degentem: contra diaboli minas et carnales inlecebras munitum pectus concedas, ne uiolenti et cruenti hostis letalibus laqueis implicemur, ut signum salutis aeternae incolume perferamus. arce a nobis omnem saeculi inluuiem omnemque diaboli persuasionem. laqueetur, concidat et separetur et amoueatur, sicut a Sarra famula tua Asmodaeus daemon nequissimus extinctus est per angelum tuum sanctum tuum Raphael. et sicut Tobiae adfuisti, ita mihi adesse digneris. et ut tribus pueris in camino et Danielo misericordiam praestitisti, sic circa nos tuos famulos facere digneris. qui mortuos suscitasti, caecos inluminasti, surdis auditum, mutis eloquium, claudis gressum, leprosis sanitatem dedisti: ita da famulis tuis, qui in te tota uirtute mentis credimus natum passum. uenturum iudicare uiuos et mortuos. adsiste nobis, sicut apostolis in uinculis, Teclae in ignibus, Paulo in persecutionibus, Petro in fluctibus. qui sedes super septem thronos ad dexteram patris, respice nos et libera de aeternae mortis interitu: unus in uno, pater in filio, filius in patre, spiritus sanctus, per quem et cum quo est tibi in sancta ecclesia honor uirtus claritas maiestas potestas benedictio inmortalitas nunc et in aeternum semper et in omnia saecula saeculorum. amen.

### English translation (Claude)

Holy, holy, holy (hagios, hagios, hagios), Holy of holies, Father of our fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, God of the prophets, God of the apostles, God of virgins, God of those who live well, God of believers, God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ your Son: we call upon you as suppliants and pray to you together, you who were begotten from the mouth of the Most High before the ordering of the world and brought forth through a mystery from the womb of the holy Virgin Mary. As we pray, deign to grant the desire of our soul, and integrity of heart as well, so that our breast, cleansed from carnal sins by the saving washing, may remain unharmed. We ask that you allow us always to flourish in your holy church with unimpaired faith, uncorrupted mind, strong devotion, and constant work and love; for to you we bend the knee, we bow the neck, you in whom angels, archangels, thousands of thousands of martyrs, the choir of apostles and prophets exult in glory, to whom all birds sing praises, whom the tongues of those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth confess. To you all the waters in heaven and under heaven give praise; things without sense perceive you; you alone are, and besides you there is no one. We beseech you, Lord, almighty Father, who are visible to the Son alone; angels and archangels obey you, Lord Father. We pray you to grant us an upright mind, pure innocence, devoted sincerity, a holy, sober, chaste conscience, living with glorious faith against all the snares of the world. Grant us a breast fortified against the threats of the devil and the allurements of the flesh, lest we be entangled in the deadly snares of the violent and bloody enemy, so that we may carry the sign of eternal salvation through unharmed. Keep far from us all the filth of the world and every persuasion of the devil. Let him be snared, let him fall, be separated, and removed, as Asmodeus, the most wicked demon, was destroyed from Sarah your handmaid by your holy angel Raphael. And as you stood by Tobias, so deign to stand by me. And as you showed mercy to the three young men in the furnace and to Daniel, so deign to do toward us your servants. You who raised the dead, enlightened the blind, gave hearing to the deaf, speech to the mute, walking to the lame, health to the lepers: grant this also to your servants, who believe in you with all the strength of our mind, born, having suffered, coming to judge the living and the dead. Stand by us, as you stood by the apostles in chains, by Thecla in the fire, by Paul in persecutions, by Peter in the waves. You who sit upon the seven thrones at the right hand of the Father, look upon us and free us from the destruction of eternal death: one in one, the Father in the Son, the Son in the Father, the Holy Spirit, through whom and with whom be to you, in the holy church, honor, power, glory, majesty, might, blessing, immortality, now and for ever, always, and to all ages of ages. Amen.

### Translation notes

- One of two prayers falsely ascribed to Cyprian (CSEL 3.3), of uncertain date. The editor deletes “only-begotten Son” (fili unigenite) after “pray to you”, and “pure” in the list of virtues; with that deletion the prayer is addressed to the Father, though the clause on being begotten and born of Mary fits the Son. Allusions: Isa 6:3; Exod 3:6; Dan 7:10; Phil 2:10; Isa 45:21; John 6:46; Matt 11:5; John 10:38, 14:10; and the Apostles' Creed. Asmodeus and Raphael: Tob 3:8, 8:3; the three young men and Daniel: Dan 3, 6 (and the Prayer of Azariah); Thecla in the fire: Acts of Paul and Thecla 22; Peter in the waves: Matt 14:30–31.
