1.2.1Funk–Diekamp 2
Ho gar ontōs eunouchisas heauton dia tēn basileian tōn ouranōn ē partheneusas dia pantōn opheiletēs estin axion heauton anadeixai tēs basileias.
For one who has truly made himself a eunuch for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, or lives as a virgin, is bound in every way to show himself worthy of the kingdom.
1.2.2Funk–Diekamp 2
ou gar en logǭ ē schēmati ē onomati ē genei ē morphę̄ ē ischyï ē chronǭ hē basileia tōn ouranōn katalambanetai, allʼ en dynamei pisteōs; epideiknymenēn gar pistin apangelei dikaios energōs. ho de ontōs dikaios ek pisteōs pistin echei energē, pistin auxanousan, pistin peplērophorēmenēn, pistin phōtizousan en tois kalois ergois, hina doxasthę̄ ho tōn holōn theos.
For the kingdom of heaven is not attained by word, or appearance, or name, or race, or form, or strength, or age, but by the power of faith; for the righteous man will declare faith shown actively. The one who is truly righteous by faith has active faith, growing faith, faith fully assured, faith shining in good works, so that the God of all may be glorified.
1.2.3Funk–Diekamp 2
ho gar ontōs philoptōchos akouei tou legontos; Eleēmosynai kai pistis mē ekleipetōsan se; aphapsai de autas epi 〈tǭ〉 sǭ trachēlǭ, kai heurēseis charin; kai pronoou kala enōpion kyriou kai anthrōpōn.
For the one who truly loves the poor listens to the one who says, “Let not almsgiving and faith fail you; bind them about your neck, and you will find favour”; and, “Provide good things before the Lord and before men.”
1.2.4Funk–Diekamp 2
Odoi dikaiōn homoiōs phōti lampousin, proporeuontai kai phōtizousin, heōs katorthōsę̄ hē hēmera.
“The ways of the righteous shine like light; they go before and give light until the day is fully established.”
1.2.5Funk–Diekamp 2
chrē oun ton tou theou anthrōpon en panti ergǭ agathǭ kai logǭ exērtysthai kai kosmeisthai kai euchēmonōs kai kata taxin panta prattein pros hypotypōsin tōn autǭ peithomenōn.
The man of God, then, must be equipped and adorned in every good work and word, and do everything decently and in order, as a pattern for those who obey him.
Letters 1, chapter 3
1.3.1Funk–Diekamp 2
ho gar hēgoumenos ek tou en tǭ ergǭ proēgeisthai kaleitai hēgoumenos. onoma gar psilon ouk eisagei eis tēn basileian tōn ouranōn.
For the one who leads is called a leader from leading the way in action. A bare name does not bring one into the kingdom of heaven.
1.3.2Funk–Diekamp 2
ho neaniskos toinyn, toutestin ho heauton eunouchisas dia tēn basileian, kai hē parthenos, ean mē kata panta toioutoi ōsin, hōsper hoi alēthinoi mimētai tou Christou, ou dynantai sōthēnai.
The young man, then, that is, the one who has made himself a eunuch for the kingdom, and the virgin, cannot be saved unless they are such in every respect as the true imitators of Christ.
1.3.3Funk–Diekamp 2
to gar legesthai parthenon kai tas aretas mē echein analogous kai oikeious kai harmozousas tę̄ parthenǭ, mōran tēn toiautēn parthenian ephēsen ho kyrios; aphengēs gar ousa kai anelaios exō tēs basileias tōn ouranōn ekkleietai. nymphiou charas sterētheisa, kai meta tōn misountōn ton nymphion logisthēsetai; dokei gar einai ti hē apraktos mēden ousa, kai phrenapatą heautēn.
For to be called a virgin and not to have the virtues corresponding, proper, and fitting to a virgin, such virginity the Lord called foolish: being without light and without oil, it is shut out of the kingdom of heaven, deprived of the joy of the bridegroom, and will be counted with those who hate the bridegroom. For she thinks herself something while she is nothing, doing nothing, and deceives herself.
1.3.4Funk–Diekamp 2
to de ergon heautou dokimazetō hekastos kai heauton epiginōsketō, hoti thrēskeia estin mataios; parthenian kai enkrateian homologountes echein, tēn de dynamin autēs ērnēmenoi.
But let each one test his own work and know himself, that such religion is vain: professing to have virginity and continence, but having denied its power.
1.3.5Funk–Diekamp 2
kai ho toioutos tēn hagneian enkomboutai en tǭ hagnǭ phobǭ kyriou.
And such a one clothes himself with chastity in the pure fear of the Lord.
1.3.6Funk–Diekamp 2

And the one who has truly nailed his flesh from the fear of the Lord has, from the fear of the Lord, renounced “Increase and multiply,” and renounced being a man in this respect; he has denied the cares and deceits and pleasures of the world, its debauchery, drunkenness, and Babylonian confusions, and all the things of this life; he has bidden farewell to the world and to its nets, entanglements, and snares, and while walking on earth has loved to have his citizenship in heaven.
Letters 1, chapter 4
1.4.1Funk–Diekamp 2

For, reaching after better things, he has bidden farewell to the world, so as to live a divine, heavenly, angelic life, in pure, undefiled, and holy religion in the Spirit of God, serving God Almighty for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.
1.4.2Funk–Diekamp 2
diʼ hēn kai apetaxato tǭ tēs sarkos phronēmati.
For its sake he has also bidden farewell to the mind of the flesh.
Letters 1, chapter 5
1.5.2Funk–Diekamp 2

Contend lawfully to compete, so that you may receive the crown you have chosen and march wearing the crown into the Jerusalem above.
1.5.3Funk–Diekamp 2
agōnisōmetha nikēsai tēn sarka kai to tautēs phronēma en pneumati theou. nikēsōmen ton satanan, ton drakonta en tǭ endynamounti hēmas Christǭ.
Let us contend to conquer the flesh and its mind in the Spirit of God. Let us conquer Satan, the dragon, in Christ who strengthens us.
1.5.4Funk–Diekamp 2

Let us take up the cross and follow the victory-bringing Jesus. Let us contend to run straight and confidently, so that we may lay hold of the prize of the upward call in Christ.
1.5.5Funk–Diekamp 2

For everyone who runs with full assurance and not uncertainly lays hold of the crown of renunciation and the much-laboured and richly rewarded wealth of chastity. It is a great thing, then, to remain in chastity… But one must also, as has been said, have the other virtues corresponding to virginity; for virginity is higher than all.
Letters 1, chapter 6
1.6.1Funk–Diekamp 2
Parthenou gar mētra ekyēse ton theon logon. ek toutou gnōthi tēn doxan tēs parthenias. hoi gar aphieroumenoi tǭ theǭ mimētai tou Christou ginontai.
For a virgin’s womb conceived God the Word. From this learn the glory of virginity. For those consecrated to God become imitators of Christ.
1.6.2Funk–Diekamp 2
ginou hōs Iōannēs ho tou Christou prodromos, ho hagnos tou kyriou angelos.
Be like John, the forerunner of Christ, the pure messenger of the Lord;
1.6.3Funk–Diekamp 2

and like John who leaned on the Lord’s breast, whom Jesus loved as pure.
1.6.4Funk–Diekamp 2
Paulos kai Barnabas kai Timotheos ton dromon tēs hagneias kai ton agōna aspilōs etelesan, hōs alēthōs mimētai tou Christou.
Paul and Barnabas and Timothy finished the course of chastity and the contest spotlessly, as true imitators of Christ.
1.6.5Funk–Diekamp 2

And you will find the life of Elijah and Elisha and many others to have been likewise chaste and blameless. If, then, you wish to imitate these, imitate the elders strongly, of whom it says, “Considering the outcome of their way of life, imitate their faith”; and, “Be imitators of me, as I also am of Christ.”
Letters 1, chapter 7
1.7.1Funk–Diekamp 2

The imitators of Christ imitate him strongly. For contending thus you will be able truly to form in yourselves the image of Christ in all things: in life, in conduct, in purpose, in word, in deed, in endurance, in courage, in prudence, in temperance, in righteousness, in long-suffering, in forbearance, in piety, in holiness, in continence, in faith, in hope, in most perfect love toward God.
1.7.2Funk–Diekamp 2

For true eunuchhood and true virginity in the Lord is holy in body and spirit, serving the Lord without distraction and with devotion in the Spirit of God, pleasing the Lord purely and undefiled, and always anxious how to please him.
1.7.3Funk–Diekamp 2
Kai en pneumati estin pros ton kyrion, kathōs gegraptai; Hagioi esesthe, hoti egō hagios eimi, legei kyrios.
And it is in spirit toward the Lord, as it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy, says the Lord.”
Letters 1, chapter 8
1.8.1Funk–Diekamp 2

Whoever has these and the like in himself is fleshly and a son of the adversary. For “what is born of the flesh is flesh,” and “he who is of the earth speaks of the earth,” thinking earthly things. “For the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor can it be.” And in such a one the Spirit of God does not dwell.
1.8.5Funk–Diekamp 2

Letters 1, chapter 9
1.9.1Funk–Diekamp 2
Ho gar pneuma theou echōn pneumati theou stoichei kai pneumati theou tas praxeis tou sōmatos thanatoi kai zę̄ tǭ theǭ, hypopiazōn kai doulagōgōn tēn sarka.
For the one who has the Spirit of God walks by the Spirit of God, and by the Spirit of God puts to death the deeds of the body, and lives to God, buffeting and bringing the flesh into subjection.
1.9.2Funk–Diekamp 2

For in the man of God there is no fleshly mind, but all the saving fruits of the Spirit, in whom God dwells and walks.
1.9.3Funk–Diekamp 2
