About this work
- Author
- Origen
- Attribution
- authentic · Seventeen sermons preached by Origen at Caesarea. The Greek original is lost except for fragments; the homilies survive in the Latin translation of Rufinus of Aquileia (ca. 400-410), who says that he adapted and sometimes supplemented them. The Latin is a translation, not Origen's own wording.
- Standing
- Not honoured as a saint or in a church calendar by the Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant traditions. Deposed by Demetrius of Alexandria (ca. 231) but kept as teacher by the churches of Caesarea and Jerusalem; condemned only long after his death.
- Date
- ca. 238–250 (Rufinus's translation ca. 400–410) (approximate) · Origen's preaching at Caesarea, probably after about 238; the date is a scholarly estimate. Rufinus's Latin translation dates to about 400–410.
