Κἀγώ· Οὐ ταύτας μὲν τὰς ἀποδείξεις ἔμελλον φέρειν, εἶπον, ὦ Τρύφων, διʼ ὧν καταδικάζεσθαι τοὺς ταῦτα καὶ τὰ τοιαῦτα προσκυνοῦντας ἐπίσταμαι, ἀλλὰ τοιαύτας πρὸς ἃς ἀντειπεῖν μὲν οὐδεὶς δυνήσεται. Ξέναι δέ σοι δόξουσιν εἶναι, καίπερ καθʼ ἡμέραν ἀναγινωσκόμεναι ὑφʼ ὑμῶν, ὡς καὶ ἐκ τούτου συνεῖναι ὑμᾶς ὅτι διὰ τὴν ὑμετέραν κακίαν ἀπέκρυψεν ὁ θεὸς ἀφʼ ὑμῶν τὸ δύνασθαι νοεῖν τὴν σοφίαν τὴν ἐν τοῖς λόγοις αὐτοῦ, πλήν τινων, οἷς κατὰ χάριν τῆς πολυσπλαγχνίας αὐτοῦ, ὡς ἔφη Ἡσαΐας, ἐγκατέλιπε σπέρμα εἰς σωτηρίαν, ἵνα μὴ ὡς Σοδομιτῶν καὶ Γομορραίων τέλεον καὶ τὸ ὑμέτερον γένος ἀπόληται. Προσέχετε τοιγαροῦν οἷσπερ μέλλω ἀναμιμνήσκειν ἀπὸ τῶν ἁγίων γραφῶν, οὐδὲ ἐξηγηθῆναι δεομένων ἀλλὰ μόνον ἀκουσθῆναι.

And I said, “I was not going to bring these proofs, Trypho, by which I know that those who worship these and such things are condemned, but such as no one will be able to contradict. They will seem strange to you, though they are read by you every day; so that from this too you may understand that because of your wickedness God has hidden from you the ability to understand the wisdom in his words, except for some, for whom, by the grace of his great compassion, as Isaiah said, he left a seed for salvation, so that your race too might not perish utterly like the Sodomites and Gomorrahites. Attend, then, to what I am about to recall from the holy Scriptures, which need no explanation but only to be heard.
