English · Claude translation

And while I was in this state, since I once wished to be filled with great quiet and to avoid the paths of men, I went to a certain place not far from the sea. And when I was near that spot, where I meant to be alone with myself on arriving, an old man, not contemptible in appearance, showing a gentle and dignified character, followed me at a little distance. And when I turned toward him, I stopped and looked at him keenly.
