Οὕτω γὰρ καὶ τοῦ ἀπορεῖν περὶ ὧν ἐποίησεν ὁ νομοθέτης παυσόμεθα. Οὐ γὰρ καταλιπὼν τὸν θεὸν ἐπὶ θηρίον, διʼ οὗ ἡ παράβασις καὶ παρακοὴ τὴν ἀρχὴν ἔλαβεν, ἔπειθε τὸν λαὸν ἐλπίζειν. Καὶ ταῦτα μετὰ πολλοῦ νοῦ καὶ μυστηρίου γέγονε καὶ ἐρρέθη διὰ τοῦ μακαρίου προφήτου· καὶ οὐδέν ἐστιν ὅ τις μέμψασθαι δικαίως ἔχει τῶν λελεγμένων ἢ γεγενημένων ὑπὸ πάντων ἁπλῶς τῶν προφητῶν, ἐὰν τὴν γνῶσιν τὴν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἔχητε.

English · Claude translation

“For in this way we shall also stop being at a loss about what the lawgiver did. For he did not forsake God and persuade the people to hope in a beast through which transgression and disobedience began. And these things were done and spoken with great understanding and mystery by the blessed prophet; and there is nothing that anyone can justly blame in what was said or done by all the prophets without exception, if you have the knowledge that is in them.
