2Routh 2

Ἐν ᾧ ἄν τις δύναιτο εὖ ποιεῖν τοῖς πλησίον καὶ οὐ ποιεῖ· ἀλλότριος τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Κυρίου νομισθήσεται.

En hǭ an tis dynaito eu poiein tois plēsion kai ou poiei; allotrios tēs agapēs tou Kyriou nomisthēsetai.

Whoever is able to do good to his neighbors and does not do it will be reckoned a stranger to the love of the Lord.

Notes and citation

Summary: Irenaeus says that one who can do good to his neighbors and does not will be counted a stranger to the Lord's love.

  • Preserved by Maximus the Confessor (Sermon 7, On Almsgiving), who ascribes it to Irenaeus; the editor places it with the letter to Victor. The ascription rests on this one witness.
