Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The Jews confess one God who created all things from nothing by his will, and angels made to serve creation.

Καὶ τὸν μὲν θεὸν ἕνα εἶναι λέγουσι, δημιουργόν τε τοῦ παντὸς καὶ κ[ύριον], ποιήσαντα πάντα οὐ πρότερον ὄ[ντα], οὐδὲ ἔκ τινος ὑποκειμένης συγχρόνου οὐσίας, ἀ[λλὰ θ]ελήσαντα καὶ κτίσαντα, εἶναί τε ἀγγέλους, καὶ τούτους γενομένους πρὸς λειτουργίαν τῆς κτίσεως, ἀλλὰ καὶ πνεῦμα ἐξουσιαστικὸν πρὸς δόξαν καὶ αἶνον θεῷ ἀεὶ παραμένον· τὰ πάντα δὲ ἐν τῇ κτίσει αἴσθησιν ἔχειν καὶ μηδὲν εἶναι ἄψυχον.
