Refutation of All Heresies 4.43.9
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: The lower hemisphere of earth and water is female and maleficent; each pair has male and female.
English · Claude translation
for the monad, being fine in its parts, flies to the finest and purest part of the ether; and the other two elements, being thicker, earth and water, he assigned to the dyad, and this hemisphere is called downward-tending, feminine, and maleficent. And again, the upper two elements themselves, compared with each other, have in themselves the male and the female for the fruitfulness and increase of all things.
