Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Τοῦτον δὲ τὸν λόγον, ὃν θεὸν ὀνομάζουσι, σωματικὸν εἶναι, περικείμενόν τε σῶμα ἔξωθεν ἑαυτοῦ, καθάπερ εἴ τις τὸ ἐκ τῶν προβάτων ἔνδυμα φορεῖ, ἀπεκδυσάμενον δὲ τὸ σῶμα, ὃ περίκειται, ὀφθαλμοφανῶς φαίνεσθαι. Πόλεμον δὲ εἶναι ἐν τῷ περικειμένῳ αὐτῶν σώματι οἱ Βραχμᾶνες λέγουσι [καὶ πλῆρες εἶναι πολεμίων αὐτοῖς τὸ σῶμα νενομίκασι], πρὸς ὃ ὡς πρὸς πολεμίους παρατεταγμένοι μάχονται, καθὼς προδεδηλώκαμεν.

This Word, which they name God, is bodily, and has a body wrapped around it outside itself, as if one wore a garment of sheepskin; and when it has stripped off the body that it wears, it appears visible to the eye.
