Summary: What Mary bore was the firstborn Word of God united to a firstborn man formed in her womb.

### English translation (Claude)

Tell me, blessed Mary, what was that which was conceived by you in the womb, and what was that which was carried by you in a virgin womb? For it was the firstborn Word of God coming down from heaven upon you, and a firstborn man being formed in the womb, so that the firstborn Word of God might be shown joined to a firstborn man.

Summary: The Word's visitations of his people: the second through prophets such as Samuel, the third in the flesh, when he wept over Jerusalem.

### English translation (Claude)

… the second, through the prophets, as through Samuel, calling back and turning the people from slavery to the foreigners; and the third, in which he was present in the flesh, having taken up the man from the Virgin; who also, seeing the city, wept over it.

Summary: The yearly feasts prefigured Christ: Passover his sacrifice as the true Passover, Pentecost his ascension offering man to God.

### English translation (Claude)

And for this reason three seasons of the year were prefigured with reference to him, the Savior, so that he might fulfill the mysteries prophesied about him: at the Passover, so that he might show himself as the one who was to be sacrificed as a sheep and shown to be the true Passover, as the apostle says: “Our Passover was sacrificed for us, Christ the God”; and at Pentecost, so that he might signify beforehand the kingdom of the heavens, having himself first gone up into the heavens and offered man as a gift to God.

### Scripture references

- 1 Cor 5:7: quotation, high confidence
- Isa 53:7: allusion, medium confidence
- Exod 23:14: echo, low confidence

### Translation notes

- Quoted by Theodoret, Eranistes 2. ‘Christ the God’ is the author's own expansion of 1 Cor 5:7. The third season is not reached in the quotation.
