Συντετέλεσται δῆτα καθʼ ἡμᾶς πάντα, ὁπηνίκα τῶν μὲν προσευκτηρίων τοὺς οἴκους ἐξ ὕψους εἰς ἔδαφος αὐτοῖς θεμελίοις καταρριπτουμένους, τὰς δὲ ἐνθέους καὶ ἱερὰς γραφὰς κατὰ μέσας ἀγορὰς πυρὶ παραδιδομένας αὐτοῖς ἐπείδομεν ὀφθαλμοῖς, τούς τε τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν ποιμένας αἰσχρῶς ὧδε κἀκεῖσε κρυπταζομένους, τοὺς δὲ ἀσχημόνως ἁλισκομένους, καὶ πρὸς τῶν ἐχθρῶν καταπαιζομένους, ὅτε καὶ κατὰ τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον, ἐξεχύθη ἐξουδένωσις ἐπʼ ἄρχοντας, καὶ ἐπλάνησεν αὐτοὺς ἐν ἀβάτῳ καὶ οὐχ ὁδῷ. “

All these things have indeed been fulfilled in our day, when we saw with our own eyes the houses of prayer thrown down from their height to the ground, foundations and all, and the inspired and holy Scriptures committed to the fire in the middle of the marketplaces, and the shepherds of the churches shamefully hiding here and there, while others were disgracefully captured and mocked by their enemies; when also, according to the prophetic word, “contempt was poured out upon rulers, and he made them wander in a trackless place and not on a road.”
