ἐκ δὴ τούτων ὁρμώμενος πόλιν μὲν οὐ μίαν οὐδὲ χώραν, ὅλας δὲ ἄρδην τὰς ὑπʼ αὐτὸν ἐπαρχίας χρυσοῦ καὶ ἀργύρου καὶ χρημάτων ἀμυθήτων εἰσπράξεσιν, ἐπισκήψεσί τε βαρυτάταις καὶ ἄλλοτε ἄλλαις καταδίκαις ἠνία καὶ κατεπίεζε. τῶν γε μὴν εὐπόρων τὰς ἐκ προγόνων περιποιηθείσας οὐσίας ἀφαιρούμενος, πλούτους ἀθρόως καὶ σωροὺς χρημάτων τοῖς ἀμφʼ αὐτὸν κόλαξιν ἐδωρεῖτο.

Setting out from these measures, he harassed and oppressed not one city or region but all the provinces under him entirely, with exactions of gold and silver and untold sums of money, with the heaviest levies and with one penalty after another. Taking from the wealthy the property acquired from their ancestors, he presented riches and heaps of money all at once to the flatterers around him.
