τὰ μὲν οὖν πρὸ τοῦ καθʼ ἡμῶν πολέμου τῆς Ῥωμαίων ἡγεμονίας, ἐν ὅσοις δὴ χρόνοις τὰ τῶν ἀρχόντων φίλιά τε ἡμῖν ἦν καὶ εἰρηναῖα, ὁπόσης ἀγαθῶν εὐφορίας καὶ εὐετηρίας ἠξίωτο, τίς ἂν ἐξαρκέσειε λόγος διηγήσασθαι; ὁπότε καὶ οἱ μάλιστα τῆς καθόλου κρατοῦντες ἀρχῆς, δεκαετηρίδας καὶ εἰκοσαετηρίδας τῆς βασιλείας ἐκπλήσαντες, ἐν ἑορταῖς καὶ πανηγύρεσι, φαιδροτάταις τε θαλίαις καὶ εὐφροσύναις μετὰ πάσης εὐσταθοῦς διετέλουν εἰρήνης.

What account could suffice to describe the abundance of good things and prosperity that the Roman government enjoyed before the war against us, in all the time that the rulers were friendly and peaceful toward us?
