ἐπιστάμεθα δὲ, ἀγαπητοὶ, ὅτι τὸν ἐπί- “σκοπον καὶ τὸ ἱερατεῖον ἅπαν παράδειγμα εἶναι δεῖ “τῷ πλήθει πάντων καλῶν ἔργων, καὶ οὐδὲ ἐκεῖνο “ἀγνοοῦμεν, ὅσοι ὑπὸ τοῦ συνεισάγειν ἑαυτοῖς γυ- “ναῖκας ἐξέπεσον, οἱ δʼ ὑπωπτεύθησαν· ὥστʼ εἰ “καὶ δοίη τις αὐτῷ τὸ μηδὲν ἀσελγὲς ποιεῖν, ἀλλὰ “τήν γε ὑπόνοιαν τὴν ἐκ τοῦ τοιούτου πράγματος “φυομένην ἐχρῆν εὐλαβηθῆναι, μή τινα σκανδαλίσῃ, “τοὺς δὲ καὶ μιμεῖσθαι προτρέψηται.

English · Claude translation

We know, beloved, that the bishop and the whole priesthood ought to be an example to the multitude of all good works; and we are not ignorant how many have fallen through bringing women to live with them, and others have come under suspicion. So even if one grants that he does nothing licentious, he ought at least to have guarded against the suspicion arising from such a practice, lest he cause anyone to stumble or encourage others to imitate him.
