πολλοὺς δὲ ὁμωνύμους Ἰωάννῃ τῷ ἀπο- ῾στόλῳ νομίζω γεγονέναι, οἳ διὰ τὴν πρὸς ἐκεῖνον ‘ἀγάπην, καὶ τὸ θαυμάζειν καὶ ζηλοῦν, ἀγαπηθῆναί “τε ὁμοίως αὐτῷ βούλεσθαι ὑπὸ τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ τὴν “ἐπωνυμίαν τὴν αὐτὴν ἠσπάσαντο, ὥσπερ καὶ ὁ Παῦ- “λος πολὺς καὶ δὴ ὁ Πέτρος ἐν τοῖς τῶν πιστῶν παι- “σὶν ὀνομάζεται.

I think there were many of the same name as John the apostle, who, out of love for him, and admiring and emulating him, and wishing to be loved by the Lord as he was, embraced the same name too, just as many of the children of the faithful are named Paul and indeed Peter.
