But not long after, when Valerian had undergone slavery among the barbarians, his son, ruling alone, conducted the government more prudently. He at once ended the persecution against us by edicts, commanding by a rescript that those who preside over the word should freely perform their customary duties. It runs thus: “The Emperor Caesar Publius Licinius Gallienus, Pius, Felix, Augustus, to Dionysius, Pinnas, Demetrius, and the other bishops. I have ordered the benefit of my gift to be extended throughout the whole world, that they should depart from the places of worship. And therefore you too may use the ordinance of my rescript, so that no one may molest you. And this which you are permitted to carry out has already long since been granted by me. And therefore Aurelius Quirinius, who is in charge of the supreme administration, will observe the ordinance given by me.” Let this, translated from the Latin for greater clarity, be inserted here. Another decree of the same emperor is also extant, addressed to other bishops, permitting them to recover the sites of the so-called cemeteries.
