ἀλλὰ καὶ μείζονι τῆς ἡλικίας προθυμίᾳ χρώμενος, ἐν ψύχει καὶ γυμνότητι διακαρτερῶν, εἰς ἄκρον τε ὑπερβαλλούσης ἀκτημοσύνης ἐλαύνων, τοὺς ἀμφʼ αὐτὸν εἰς τὰ μάλιστα κατέπλησσε, μυρίους μὲν ὅσους λυπῶν εὐχομένους αὐτῷ κοινωνεῖν τῶν ὑπαρχόντων, διʼ οὑς ἑώρων αὐτὸν εἰσφέροντα περὶ τὴν θείαν διδασκαλίαν καμάτους, οὐ μὴν αὐτός γε ἐνδιδοὺς ταῖς καρτερίαις.

English · Claude translation

With an eagerness beyond his years, persevering in cold and nakedness and going to the very extreme of poverty, he greatly astonished those around him. He grieved countless people who wished to share their goods with him because of the labours they saw him bestow on divine teaching, but he did not relax his endurance.
