τούτοις καὶ ἱστορίαν προστίθησιν, ἣν οἰκείως παραθήσομαι, τοῦτον ἔχουσαν τὸν τρόπον ἐν οἷς “καὶ οἶ πρὸ Σωτῆρος πρεσβύτεροι οἶ προστάντες “ἐκκλησίας ἧς σὺ νῦν ἀφηγῇ, Ἀνίκητον λέγομεν “Πίον, Ὑγῖνόν τε καὶ Τελεσφόρον καὶ Ξυστὸν, “αὐτοὶ ἐτήρησαν οὔτε τοῖς μετʼ αὐτῶν ἐπέτρεπον, καὶ οὐδὲν ἔλαττον αὐτοὶ μὴ τηροῦντες εἰρήνευον “τοῖς ἀπὸ τῶν παροικιῶν, ἐν αἷς ἐτηρεῖτο, ἐρχομένοις ‘πρὸς αὐτούς· καίτοι μᾶλλον ἐναντίον ἦν τὸ τηρεῖν “τοῖς μὴ τηροῦσι.

To this he adds a story which I shall fitly quote. It runs thus: “Among these, the presbyters before Soter who presided over the church which you now lead, I mean Anicetus and Pius, Hyginus and Telesphorus and Xystus, neither kept it themselves nor permitted those with them to do so; and nonetheless, though not keeping it, they were at peace with those who came to them from the communities in which it was kept; yet keeping it was the more opposed to those who did not keep it.
