καὶ ταῦτʼ ἔπραττον “ὡς δυνάμενοι νικῆσαι τὸν θεὸν καὶ ἀφελέσθαι αὐτῶν “τῶν τὴν παλιγγενεσίαν, ἔνα, ὡς ἔλεγον ἐκεῖνοι, “μηδὲ ἐλπίδα σχῶσιν ἀναστάσεως, ἐφʼ ᾗ πεποιθότες “ξένην τινὰ καὶ καινὴν ἡμῖν εἰσάγουσι θρησκείαν, “καὶ καταφρονοῦσι τῶν δεινῶν, ἕτοιμοι καὶ “χαρᾶς ἥκοντες ἐπὶ τὸν θάνατον· νῦν ἴδωμεν εἰ ἀναστήσονται, “καὶ εἰ δύναται βοηθῆσαι αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐξελέσθαι ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν ἡμῶν.”

And they did this as if able to conquer God and deprive them of their rebirth, “so that,” as they said, “they may not even have hope of a resurrection, trusting in which they introduce a foreign and new religion among us, and despise terrors, coming ready and with joy to death. Now let us see whether they will rise again, and whether their God can help them and deliver them out of our hands.”
