καὶ οἱ μὲν ἐνεβριμῶντο καὶ ἔβρυχον τοὺς ὀδόντας “ἐπʼ αὐτοῖς, ζητοῦντές τινα περισσοτέραν ἐκδίκησιν “παρʼ αὐτῶν λαβεῖν, οἱ δὲ ἐνεγέλων καὶ ἐπετώθαζον, “μεγαλύνοντες ἅμα τὰ εἴδωλα αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐκείνοις “προσάπτοντες τὴν τούτων τιμωρίαν, οἱ δὲ ἐπιεικέστεροι “καὶ κατὰ ποσὸν συμπαθεῖν δοκοῦντες ὡνείδιζον “πολὺ λέγοντες ποῦ ὁ θεὸς αὐτῶν, καὶ τί αὐτοὺς “τοὺς ὤνησεν ἡ θρησκεία, ἣν καὶ πρὸ τῆς ἑαυτῶν “εἵλοντο ψυχῆς;

Some raged and gnashed their teeth at them, seeking to take some further vengeance on them; others laughed and mocked, magnifying their idols and ascribing to them the punishment of these; while the more reasonable, who seemed to have some measure of sympathy, reproached them greatly, saying, “Where is their God, and what good did their religion do them, which they chose even before their own lives?”
