μετὰ ταῦθʼ οἱ μὲν τρέμοντες ἐξῄεσαν, πρὸς ἒν τοῦτο δει- λοὶ, καὶ μόλις ταύτης τῆς τροφῆς παραχωρήσαντες τῇ μητρί. ἀνεπλήσθη δʼ εὐθέως ὅλη τοῦ μύσους ἡ “πόλις, καὶ πρὸ ὀμμάτων ἕκαστος τὸ πάθος ἀναλαμβάνβν ὡς παρʼ αὐτοῦ τολμηθὲν δεινῶς ἔφριττε.

After this they went out trembling, cowardly in this one thing, and scarcely yielding this food to the mother. The whole city was at once filled with the abomination, and each, setting the horror before his eyes, shuddered as though he himself had dared it.
