φανερὸς μέν γε οὐ- “ δάμου σῖτος ἦν, ἐπεισπηδῶντες δὲ διηρεύνων τὰς “ οἰκίας, ἔπειθʼ εὑρόντες μὲν ὡς ἀρνησαμένους ᾐκί- “ ζοντο, μὴ εὑρόντες δὲ ὡς ἐπιμελέστερον κρύψαντας ἐβασάνιζον. τεκμήριον δὲ τοῦ τʼ ἔχειν καὶ μὴ τὰ σώματα τῶν ἀθλίων ἦν, ὧν οἱ μὲν ἔτι συνεστῶτες εὐπορεῖν τροφῆς ἐδόκουν, οἶ τηκόμενοι δὲ ἤδη παρωδεύοντο, καὶ κτείνειν ἄλογον ἐδόκει τοὺς ὑπʼ ἐν- δείας τεθνηξομένους αὐτίκα.

English · Claude translation

Nowhere was grain to be seen; they burst into houses and searched them; then, if they found it, they tortured the owners for having denied it; if they did not find it, they tormented them for having hidden it more carefully. The evidence of having or not having was the bodies of the wretches: those still in good condition were thought to have plenty of food, while those already wasting away were passed by, and it seemed pointless to kill those who would soon die of want.
